Sandy Skoglund -
Sandy Skoglund's work is collected in museums and shown in galleries all over the world. Sandy has taught photography at some of the most prestigious art schools in the country. Her work is also very narrative, but the stories or the fiction in her work take on the form of dream imagery or the surreal (that which lies underneath reality) more than history and mythology. Sandy Skoglunds photography is unlike many earlier photographers that worked at capturing the moment or having photography be a window to reality like Elliot Erwitt or Cartier Bresson. Instead of a photography that is reactive to the environment around her Skoglund fabricates or makes her reality by building sets and constructing elaborate spaces that she then photographs. In this way, along with the other narrative photographers that we looked at earlier (Wall, Sherman, and Crewdson) Skoglund's photographs are more proactive than reactive.
One thing that is interesting about her work is that the truth value of the photographic image (is it real or not?) is turned upside down. When you look at her work, not including the True Fiction Two series, you think that you are looking at extreme digitally manipulated images when in fact she has actually photographed a real environment. The images that you see in the "The Cocktail Party" and "Revenge of the Goldfish" are not just digital creations and trickery they are actual constructed installations meticulously crafted, painted and then photographed. Amazing!

In many of Sandy's photos I noticed that she used color to warp the reality of the image but also to bring attention to certain aspects of ther photo.
The color in the True Fiction Series seems to not only make the image pop, but also point out the little details that wouldn't have been noticed if the image had been unaltered.

She uses the colors in her images in order to accentuate the subjects or objects in her images. It gives the picture a whole different aspect than it would without the use of color the way she does.
The color functioning in the True Fiction Two series allows the images to blend into one image...while, at the same time, each item in the image is noticed even more with the variety of color she uses.

1. The relationship of colors in Sandy's images tie the entire image together. Sandy obviously made a very specific choice of colors to enhance the photos and sets. An all yellow room paired with blue hangers works because blue and yellow contrast each other, but because they both have the same tone, the colors enhance each other as well.
2. Sandy's work in True Fiction Two reminds me of Andy Worhol's works such as "Mao" and his other similar portraits. She used blocks of unusual colors to single out portions of the images. The unusual colors and lack of color detail between subjects gives a surreal feeling to all of the images.

• Color is very important in Sandy Skoglund's work. How does color contribute to what she is trying to do in her images?
Color adds to the boring photos. They say little beyond boring with a flavour of tint.
• How is color functioning in the True Fiction Two series and why do you think she uses it the way that she does?
Color me bored. With her MFA, I expected more than some tinted, static photos. At least she is helping the economy by employing the families of primary colors to add pop to boring, boring, boring.

1. Sandy uses colors to bring attention to specific things or to make something stick out. All of her pictures are surrounded by bright colors. Her photographs bring objects to life!
2. None of the objects in this series of photographs are colored truly, everything is a different color than normal. I believe she does this to make things stand out and be different. There is nothing like this that I have ever seen.

I agree and feel with Sandy’s work. It draws you inward toward reality in this modern world that portrays so much fiction. Sandy’s work protest that of modern world in color that most sees yet don’t see in everyday life. Her work displays the hard truth and reality of everyday life which one not want to accept. Looking at her artwork in photograph is easily to portray that message. The truth of her image display high contrast colors to bring an image and impact… yet this can be done with black and white would also carry the same many , yet as photos from Skoglund’s work creates that “shock” factor to carry that message or meaning across thru her work.

I think that Sandy's use of color causes the feeling of surrealism. A different reality and time. :)
In the True Fiction Two series her photos are of real life subjects then the color and the choice of poses and props adds a different dimention. Not only does it hint at make believe world but also draws your attention to multiple subjects.

I love her use of things like macaroni and barbie dolls in her photos.
I know nothing about art, but I can appriciate the use of color and ordinary every day objects to add visual interest.

1) Sandy Skoglund's photos are all about reality and the truth. You can see through the images of what she is trying to get across.
2) I enjoy her images of patients and nurses, and germs are everywhere. The main colors and accents go well together. It colors brings out the image she is trying to portray.

Skoglund uses color to draw attention to the subject matter, however she uses color to make the mind use its imagination to interoperate her images.
In the True Fiction Two series I think she uses color to make the two images that she layers relate to each other in a way that it makes the mind wonder if the two images actually do function together in some meaningful way.

-Sandy uses abstract colors to really draw attention to aspects of her images. The colors she chose create a sense of fantasy or confusion.
-She accents certain pieces of the photos with bright or odd colors. Her colors all highlight eachother nicely, making her photos interesting to look at

1. Color contributes to what Sandy is trying to do in her images because it draws the eye to her photographs and gives you a sense of dimensions and space. There is that fantasy factor with her pictures that are portrayed with her color choices.
2. Her choice of colors capture attention on different areas of her photographs. You can jump from color to color and notice the change in tone. It's almost as if it blurs one area out at a time so that you are able to focus on specific zones.

Skoglund uses color to draw the viewer's attention to certain parts of the photograph. The way that she uses contrasting colors makes the these parts stand out from the background.
I think that she uses the contrasting colors in the True Fiction Two series because it gives what might seem as an ordinary photograph a sense of surrealism.

1. The color in her images is very important to what she is trying to say or state in them and give them that extra meaning and it helps concentrate on a certain aspect of the photo.
2. In the True Fiction Series I think the color help pop the little details in the photo that would have otherwise been missed.

1. Color contributes what Sandy Skoglund is trying to do in her photographs by catching the viewer's eye and drawing them into certain parts of the photo - - all with just color.
2. Color is function in True Fiction Two series by almost being an illusion. It makes you think the object could be different than it actually is. I think she does this to draw attention to images that may not have been paired together in another instance and to also make one see how color can point out small details that would go unnoticed otherwise.

Color is important to her images because it draws the eye to images that might be overlooked if the picture wasn't in a unique state. The contrasting colors make the pictures pop to make it visually interesting.
Color is functioning in the series by focusing the eye to details. Minute details are brought forward while the large images are so glaringly obvious the eye doesn't want to focus on them.

1. She uses colors to emphasize the main subject. This form of art shows the little details and how important they are to create the whole image.2. The coloring in the True Fiction Two allows the images to merge together while each side remains its own entity.

In Sandy's work color is her main focus of how she can bring a portrait alive, it brings certain aspects alive on what she tries to make stand out that you normally wouldn't think of doing.
The color in the True Fiction is two images that are borught together and at the same time creates an illusion and also the two images are their own
