Week 16 Assignment 1 - Restore an Old Historical Photograph

In this assignment, I would like you to restore an old historical photograph for the Sheridan Museum. The photograph has a crease in it as well as multiple scratches. In order fix it digitally you will need to watch some of the videos above and use tools like the clone tool, patch tool, spot healing brush, and more. Please download zipped file "Griffen_shaving_man001.zip." You will need to extract the image first by right clicking and selecting "extract all." The image is a tiff file. Do not lower the resolution of the image since the museum may use your restored version in a book or printed publication. Thank you for your help in this historical project.

Because I do not spend a lot of time on computers, this course challenged me. Those lessons that I found most useful were the ones that dealt with improving your image such as adjustments, sharpening, correcting for backlighting and exposure, and retouching. I also found the info on other historical photographers to be great. Thanks Dan for your patience. I learned a lot.

I liked Dekes top 40. All of the stuff by Chris Orwig was interesting, but some was complicated and hard to follow, you have to watch it more than once. I think the most helpful and practical tutorials were the utube videos that went along with the assignments.

I found the restoring to old photo so difficult. I would fix somthing then the face would go blurry, it was hard to have patience. I did find all the videos helpful because i didnt even know where to start with fixing the photo.

I definitely used the quick selections, layers, masking, sharpening, hue/saturation, blend modes and retouching the most.
Because I use them in almost everything I did, and they are very important in creating amazing pictures.
I had a great time doing the assignments in this class. I've messed around with Photoshop and other photo editing software before but this class definitely furthered my skills and abilities.

    Thank you so much, Dan!

I went into this class with an intermediate knowledge of Photoshop. I learned most of it on my own, however, I needed some extra knowledge so I took this class. I learned quite a bit more than I had anticipated. I love using the masks, it works wonders. I will probably revert back to my class assignments to refresh my memory on some of the techniques but all in all this was a good class. You had very good tutorials! I have heard from others that have taken this class at GC but didn't learn much b/c of the instructor (a different instructor) so I hope you continue to teach this so others can get a better knowledge of this program.

I utilized the tutorials done by Dan the most as well as the Chris Orwig tutorials. Both of the tutorials were very useful in photoshop because it gave us good examples of how to do the assignments.
